HRSA Responds to Emerging Nurse Shortage

More than 400 nurses are now working in nurse shortage areas thanks to the efforts of HRSA's Bureau of Health Professions.

HRSA's Nurse Education Loan Repayment Program, managed by BHPr, recently received $7.3 million to repay educational loans of clinical care nurses who agree to work for two years in designated public or nonprofit health facilities facing a critical shortage of nurses. This funding includes an extra $5 million that HHS Secretary Tommy G. Thompson transferred to HRSA this summer in order to address the emerging nurse shortage.

Bureau staff were nominated for a Secretary's award for processing the grants in record time.

HRSA Acting Administrator Dr. Betty Duke recently joined members of the bureau for a luncheon in appreciation for their outstanding work. (Click "luncheon" for photo montage).
