The businesses and other private and public entities served by the New York Power Authority are as diverse as New York’s geography and population. They include:

  • Business and Industrial Customers

General Motors' Tonawanda engine plant benefits from a NYPA power allocation.Over 700 businesses and industrial customers, including manufacturing companies such as Anchor Glass of Elmira and General Motors of Tonawanda, and non-manufacturing companies, such as Automatic Data Processing of Edgewood and Sysco Food Services of Warners.

  • Government Agencies and Public Systems

115 government entities in New York City and Westchester County, including New York City government, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority, the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey, the New York City Housing Authority, Westchester County government and most Westchester municipalities, school district and other public entities.

The Village of Fairport's municipal utility is a NYPA customer.47 municipal and four rural cooperative electric systems, municipal and utility service agencies in New York City and Nassau, Suffolk and Westchester Counties.

Other public customers, including Brookhaven National Laboratory, the St. Lawrence Seaway Development Corporation, the Niagara Frontier Transportation Authority and the New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation.

Public Agencies in seven neighboring states—Connecticut, Massachusetts New Jersey, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, and Vermont, as required by federal law and licenses.

  • Investor-Owned Utilities

The state’s six investor-owned utilities and the Long Island Power Authority all purchase NYPA electricity which they sell to their customers—without profit.  Much of this electricity is sold to utilities to facilitate delivery to customers who receive power under various Power Authority economic development programs.

  • Healthcare, Educational and Cultural Institutions
