New Members Are Named to Migrant Health Council

HRSA Administrator Elizabeth M. Duke today announced the appointment of four new members to four-year terms on the National Advisory Council on Migrant Health (NACMH).

The 15-member council advises the Secretary of Health and Human Services on policies to increase the effectiveness of migrant health centers in delivering primary health care to migrant and seasonal farmworkers.

The new members are:

  • Jose Manuel Gaytan, farmworker, Salt Lake City, Utah;
  • Jose L. Lopez, board member of the Oak Orchard Community Health Center Inc., Brockport, N.Y.;
  • Emma I. Segarra, board member of the Migrant Health Center Inc., Mayaguez, P.R.; and
  • Andrea Weathers, M.D., DrPH, assistant professor at the University of North Carolina, Chapel Hill, N.C.

Rogelio Fernandez, M.D., associate medical officer at United Health Centers, Kingsburg, Calif., and Rosita Castillo Zavala, chemical dependency program supervisor at Consejo Counseling and Referral, Seattle, Wash., have been appointed chair and vice chair, respectively, for one-year terms.

In addition to advising the Secretary, the Council also makes specific recommendations on matters that affect the health of migrant and seasonal farmworkers and their families, such as occupational safety, housing conditions, medical and social services, and domestic and family violence services.

HHS' Health Resources and Services Administration provides executive and staffing support for NACMH. For more information, visit the NACMH Web site.
