National Children’s Study Awards Seventh Vanguard Center (November 2005)

The National Children’s Study Program Office is pleased to welcome South Dakota State University (SDSU), with the Children’s Medical Center of Cincinnati and the University of Cincinnati, to the National Children’s Study.

In early November 2005, the Program Office awarded a contract to SDSU to serve as the seventh Study (or Vanguard) Center. The university will implement the Study in one location composed of four adjacent counties—Brookings County in South Dakota and Yellow Medicine, Pipestone, and Lincoln Counties in Minnesota.

This location and six others are the first of 105 locations where the Study will be carried out. The other six locations are:

  • Orange County, California
  • New York City (Queens), New York
  • Duplin County, North Carolina
  • Montgomery County, Pennsylvania
  • Salt Lake County, Utah
  • Waukesha County, Wisconsin

The September 2005 issue of the National Children’s Study E-Update featured an article about the first six contracts awarded.

"We are thrilled to bring South Dakota State University and its colleagues on board and look forward to the significant contributions they will make," said Peter Scheidt, MD, MPH, Director of the National Children’s Study.

In early December 2005, SDSU hosted a celebration to kick off its participation in the Study.
