Blue Ball  FAQs - Frequently Asked Questions

My smog check receipt says "Vehicle information did not match registration records". Can I still renew online?
In most cases, yes. This message generally means only that the match was not made immediately.

I am out of the state. Can I renew online?
You can renew online if your vehicle does not require a smog check. However, we cannot send Internet renewal documents to a temporary address. They will be sent to the address on file.

If your vehicle requires a smog check and you cannot have it done in Nevada, you cannot renew online. Please renew by mail and include an Emission Control Residency Affidavit.

I want to change my license plates. What do I do?
You must obtain new plates in person at the DMV. If you wish to avoid personalized or specialty plate fees charged on your current plates, you should renew at a DMV Full Service Office and exchange plates at the same time. Specialty plate fees cannot be refunded.

If fees are not an issue, you may renew online now and exchange plates later without another renewal or emissions inspection. See our License Plates pages for instructions on obtaining the specific plates of your choice.

I did not receive a renewal notice.  What do I do?
The most common cause of this is an incorrect address. We suggest you mail the renewal along with a Change of Address Application or renew in person. The post office may or may not forward the Certificate of Registration and decal if you renew online. We cannot send renewal documents to a temporary address.

If you are confident that the address on file for this vehicle is correct, you may attempt to renew online using the license plate number and last 4 digits of the Vehicle Identification Number. You must obtain a smog check first if needed.

Registrations cannot be renewed online more than 35 days before expiration. The online renewal may be rejected if your registration is suspended or canceled, if you have bad debt with the DMV or if you have unpaid parking tickets. The most common cause for rejection is a registration suspension due to a lapse in insurance coverage. See Insurance Verification.

Why can't I use my Veterans exemption or other tax exemption online?
Exemptions are issued by your county assessor. We must receive the paper copy for verification purposes. Other exemptions, such as those for active duty military, require notarized signatures. Please mail your renewal or renew in person.
