The December 2004 tsunami was caused by an earthquake. It happened in the Indian Ocean just off the western coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. The tsunami hit parts of India, Indonesia, Thailand, Sri Lanka, Maylasia and Myanmar and caused serious damage and death as far as Kenya and Somalia on the east coast of Africa.
