NYPA's Hawkins Point Facility Resumes Friday Matinee Movies In January Contact: January 6, 2009 FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE MASSENA—The New York Power Authority (NYPA) will continue its free “Friday Matinees” in January with showings of classic and contemporary movies at the admission-free Frank S. McCullough, Jr. Hawkins Point Visitors Center and Boat Launch at the St. Lawrence Franklin D. Roosevelt Power Project. NYPA will show a selection of movies on Fridays at 1:30 p.m. in the visitors center auditorium. Free popcorn will be available for the movie showings. The January schedule is: Jan. 9 : “Pride and Prejudice” (2005). In this retelling of Jane Austen's novel set in 19th-century England, Mrs. Bennet (Brenda Blethyn) hopes to marry off her daughters to prosperous gentlemen, especially when a wealthy bachelor moves nearby. Headstrong daughter Elizabeth (Keira Knightley) meets her match in Mr. Darcy, but misinterprets Darcy's honorable intentions and jeopardizes her chance at love. Jan. 16: “Daddy Long Legs” (1955). While visiting France as a goodwill ambassador, a third-generation American millionaire (Fred Astaire) meets a striking young woman (Leslie Caron) who was orphaned during World War II. Vowing to take care of her for the rest of her life, he anonymously funds her travel to the United States, where she attends a prestigious women's college. But all she knows of her mysterious benefactor is that he signs his checks "Daddy Long Legs." Jan. 23: “Miss Pettigrew Lives for a Day” (2008). After losing yet another nanny position because of her gruff demeanor, Guinevere Pettigrew (Frances McDormand) mistakenly lands an assignment as the assistant of an American starlet (Amy Adams) and finds herself swept up in a dizzying world of glamour and high society. Jan. 30: “The Maltese Falcon” (1941). This Oscar-nominated noir classic stars Humphrey Bogart as private eye Sam Spade. When sultry Miss Wonderly (Mary Astor) seeks out protection from a man named Thursby, Spade's partner (Jerome Cowan) takes the case -- and winds up dead, along with Thursby. Spade's hunt for the killer leads him into a world of deception and double crossing, as a trio of criminals search for a priceless statue known as the Maltese Falcon. The visitors center is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday through Friday. Besides enjoying the movies, visitors can sample the array of hands-on exhibits at the Hawkins Point facility, which presents information on such subjects as water power and NYPA’s St. Lawrence-FDR Power Project.
