Evaluation of Fiber Optic Runway-Distance-Remaining (RDR) Signs at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT)

The purpose of this project is to evaluate the effectiveness of fiber optic technology as applied to the illumination of airport signs. Three prototype runway-distance-remaining signs have been obtained for installation and evaluation at Pittsburgh International Airport (PIT). These signs have already been examined by AAR-410 personnel, and appear to show promise as being more visible than standard internally illuminated RDR signs during low visibility and/or nighttime operating conditions. The three signs will be installed adjacent to runway 10L-28R at PIT in February, 2000, and will be observed/evaluated over a period of several months by military, cargo and commercial airline pilots operating in and out of PIT.
