Advanced Taxiway Guidance System (ATAGS) In-Service Evaluation

This effort would focus on installing an Advanced Taxiway Guidance System (ATAGS) at a major airport.

Purpose:

Evaluate system effectiveness and reliability in providing improved airport surface guidance to aircraft taxiing during night and/or low-visibility operations.

Principal features:

Automatically controllable taxiway lighting and guidance sign(s).

Installed at a taxiway/runway intersection that has had a history of/potential for pilot route deviations and runway incursions.

The evaluation will specifically be designed to determine the effectiveness of the ATAGS in improving airport safety by reducing the chances of pilot route deviations at critical locations that can lead to runway incursions.

Presently, a project plan is being prepared, and candidate airports are being considered.
