Injury-Related Visits to Hospital Emergency Departments: United States, 1992 Advance Data 261. In 1992 an estimated 89.9 million visits were made to hospital emergency departments (ED). Of the 89.9 million visits, 34.0 million were injury related. This report summarizes injury data from the 1992 National Hospital Ambulatory Medical Care Survey. Statistics are presented on patient and visit characteristics of injury visits to hospital ED. Data Highlights: Accidental falls and motor vehicle accidents were the leading causes of injuries resulting in visits to an ED. "Open wound of head" was the most frequent principal diagnosis for injury-related ED visits. Medication was administered or prescribed at the majority of injury-related visits, with general analgesics most commonly mentioned. Males had a significantly higher rate of injury-related visits than females.
