Chart 4b. Median household income of women aged 55–64, by income category, in 2004
dollars, 1984, 1994, and 2004
Note: The income categories are derived from the ratio of the family’s
income (or an unrelated individual’s income) to the corresponding poverty threshold.
Being in poverty is measured as income less than 100 percent of the poverty threshold.
Low income is between 100 percent and 199 percent of the poverty threshold. Middle income is between 200 percent and
399 percent of the poverty threshold. High income is 400 percent or more of the
poverty threshold. Data for 1984 and 1994 have been inflation adjusted to 2004 dollars.

- Between 1984 and 1994, median household income increased for
women aged 55–64 in all income categories. However, with the exception of women
in the high income category, median household income declined for women aged 55–64
between 1994 and 2004.
- Median household income for women aged 55–64 in the high income
category increased 16 percent between 1984 and 2004, from $74,376 to $86,271. This
is the same percentage increase as for men.
- Overall, median household income increased for women aged 55–64 from $39,623 in 1984 to $50,393 in 2004.
