Retirement Resources Workshop:
Exploring the implications of resource disparities among adults
nearing retirement

Date: December 5, 2008, 1-4 pm
Location: Bureau of Labor Statistics Conference Center Room 1,
Washington, DC
Registration: Please RSVP Casey Chandler of DHHS/OS/ASPE
by November 25 at  casey.chandler@hhs.gov
Purpose: To discuss the policy relevance of disparities in retirement
resources among people nearing retirement age.
Are additional data needed to answer these questions?

Selected Indicators of Retirement Resources Among People Aged 55–64: 1984, 1994, and 2004, a publication of the Federal Interagency Forum on Aging-Related Statistics, compares the retirement resources of people aged 55–64 today with adults in that age group 10 and 20 years ago. Retirement resources reported include both economic resources (e.g., retirement income) and insurance against health care risk (e.g., long-term care insurance). By comparing the economic resources of people born in the 1940s (i.e., people aged 55–64 in 2004) to the circumstances of those born in the 1930s and in the 1920s (i.e., people aged 55–64 in 1994 and 1984, respectively), the report provides some indication of the preparedness of future generations of retirees relative to those who retired before them.

The workshop will include a discussion of these findings in the current economic and political context. Presenters will also explore

  1. how differential access to economic resources and insurance against health care risk affect people as they age,
  2. what can be done to improve the retirement resources for people as they age, and
  3. what, if any, new data are needed to better monitor these trends.

This workshop will provide important information to policymakers, economists, demographers, and anyone interested in the aging of the baby boomers.
