Abstract Analyzes the socioeconomic impacts of MPAs to select the best indicators of MPA performance. Reviews the socioeconomic literature dealing with MPAs related to ecosystem preservation, fisheries management, recreational activities, and distributional consequences of MPAs, as well as methodological issues for cost-benefit analysis, and the problem of economic valuation of non-market values. EMPAFISH is a project supported by the Commission of the European Communities within the Sixth Framework Programme for research.
