Stigma & HIV/AIDS: A Review of the Literature

Scan of publication cover

Abstract:

This booklet describes HIV-related stigma, the reaction it generates, and the lack of media coverage stigmatization receives. It discusses the presence of stigmatization in health facilities, barriers that interfere with patient/clinician treatment, stigma and the general population, and violence. The booklet was the result of a literature review designed to provide technical support for attendees of Promoting PWA Leadership in Addressing HIV/AIDS stigma and as a technical assistance tool to policy makers, HIV/AIDS service organizations, and researchers concerned with delivery of services to people at risk for or with HIV.
