HRSA Awards $7.2 Million to State Offices of Rural Health
The Health Resources and Services Administration (HRSA) today announced the renewal of $7.2 million in annual operating grants to public and private agencies that act as the eyes and ears of the nation's rural health care system – which serves the most geographically isolated communities in the country.
HRSA, part of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, is the federal agency charged with helping ensure that quality medical care is available for the most vulnerable Americans, without regard to their ability to pay.
Part of HRSA's mission is to keep track of health trends in rural areas far from major urban medical centers and monitor health care shortages in regions of the country where there are few people to support local doctors, dentists and mental health counselors.
Since 1991, HRSA has supplied annual grants to sustain a nationwide network of State Offices of Rural Health, which act as the focal point for ongoing research and examination of the well-being of rural families and a source of expert advice to local, state and federal policymakers.
This year, 36 state health departments, 11 academic institutions and a variety of non-profit groups will receive about $147,000 each in federal grants; those grants are matched on a 3:1 basis by state governments.
Among these programs is the non-profit Rural Recruiting and Retention Network. Supported largely by HRSA grantees, it attracted 734 health professionals – more than half of them doctors – to serve in rural communities in 47 states last year alone.
“Part of the challenge the federal government faces is making sure limited funds get invested in the places where they can do the most good, and that's particularly important when we're talking about health care for distant rural communities,” said HRSA Administrator Elizabeth Duke. “You need a ground-level view – and that's what the State Offices of Rural Health provide.”
