HRSA Awards $5.8 Million for Dental Care, Other Services
for People Living With HIV/AIDS

HRSA Administrator Elizabeth M. Duke today announced 41 grants totaling almost $5.8 million to fund oral health care, medical treatment and support services for medically underserved populations affected by HIV/AIDS.

Twelve grants totaling $3.8 million are being awarded through the Community-Based Dental Partnership Program of the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program. The dental partnership program supports oral health care for underserved HIV-positive populations and training for dental providers. Treatment supported by the grants includes the full range of oral health services: diagnostic and preventive care, oral health education, oral medicine and surgery.

“Impaired oral health is often the earliest clinical sign of HIV infection,” Administrator Duke said. “By helping dentists identify HIV-positive patients, the grants also aid public health officials in tracking the spread of HIV in a community.”

Thirteen other grants worth about $900,000, distributed under Part C of the Ryan White Program, will fund early intervention services that support medical, nutritional, psychosocial and other treatments for HIV-positive individuals. The grants also may be used to hire case managers to help patients access care and remain in treatment.

An additional 16 grants worth almost $1.1 million support HIV/AIDS care for women, infants, children and youth under Part D of the Ryan White Program. Grantees may use the funds to provide family-oriented medical care, education and support services to the targeted groups.
