Community-based organizations interested
in creating new health center access points that serve special
populations can learn how to build effective programs and
apply for federal grant funds in upcoming pre-application
workshops sponsored by HRSA.
Special populations include people who
are homeless, residents of public housing, and low-income
school students whose parents have little or no health insurance.
HRSA hopes to create or significantly expand 1,200
health center access points, many of those for special populations,
between fiscal years 2002 and 2006 under President Bush’s
proposed Health Centers Initiative. If approved by Congress, the expansion would be one of the
largest undertaken in the health center program’s 35-year
history.
The workshops will cover topics related
to HRSA’s:
- Health
Care for the Homeless Health Center program;
- Public
Housing Primary Care Health Center program;
- School-based
Health Center program; and the
- Black
Lung Clinics program (this workshop will only be offered
in Baltimore and Atlanta).
They are scheduled for:
- Nov.
27-28, 2001, in Baltimore;
- Dec.
10-11, 2001, in Dallas;
- Jan.
9-10, 2002, in Atlanta;
- Jan.
28-29, 2002, in San Francisco;
- Feb.
20-21, 2002, in Denver; and
- March
4-5, 2002, in Chicago.
The four workshops scheduled for 2002 are considered
tentative dates at this time.
