Awards $11.3 Million to Increase the Number of Primary Care Providers
HHS
Secretary Tommy G. Thompson today announced 19 cooperative
agreements worth more than $11.3 million to recruit diverse
students and train them directly in community-based primary
health care settings.
The awards
are being made under the Area Health Education Centers (AHEC)
program, which encourages and promotes interdisciplinary training
in primary health care for students, medical school faculty
and other practitioners.
AHECs link the academic resources of university health
science centers with community health centers and other local
clinics and resources to provide care for patients in medically
underserved areas.
Each
year, AHECs train nearly 32,000 students, a substantial number
of whom remain in service to medically underserved communities.
In addition, 25,000 high school students each year
from schools in underserved areas participate in a minimum
of 20 hours of health career enrichment programming through
AHECs. About
150,000 local health care providers participate annually in
AHEC-sponsored continuing education programs.
“Basic”
awards help states develop or expand AHECs partnerships.
Today’s awards will help establish new AHEC programs
in Indiana, Nebraska and West Virginia.
“Model” awards support the activities of already established,
state-supported AHECs.
