The HHS Advisory Committee on Organ Transplantation will
meet for the first time Dec. 3-4 in Herndon, Va., to discuss
ways to expand the donor pool, increase organ donation rates,
and review organ allocation policy. The committee offers advice
to the Secretary of Health and Human Services on all aspects
of organ donation, procurement, allocation and transplantation.
More than 78,000 people are currently on the national transplant
waiting list for organs. Fifteen people die each day – 5,500
people annually – die waiting for an organ to become available.
In 2000, 5,984 deaths resulted in donation, yet experts say
that as many as 15,000 people who die each year could be donors.
The public is welcome to attend the meeting, but seating
is limited and pre-registration is encouraged. To read the
full Federal Register notice that announced the meeting

and committee members – click for .pdf
