Abstract:

This paper, from the North Carolina Rural Health Research and Policy Analysis Center, provides an overview of the nursing home industry and characteristics of skilled nursing facilities (SNFs). It focuses on the differences between rural and urban facilities. The paper provides background for future studies on the impact of a new Medicare payment system for skilled nursing care—the SNF Prospective Payment System—on the delivery of services in rural areas. The report includes tables and figures.
