New Fact Sheets on Populations Served by Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program
New fact sheets provide details on the populations served by the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program. People living with HIV disease are, on average, poorer than the general population, and Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program clients are poorer still. Most Ryan White clients are from a racial or ethnic minority group. In 2006, more than 70 percent of clients served by the Ryan White HIV/AIDS Program were people of color. In 2006, 66 percent of clients were male and 33 percent were female. The fact sheets address: African Americans; American Indians and Alaska Natives; Asian/Pacific Islanders; Hispanics; youth; deaf and hard of hearing; substance users; women; men who have sex with men; and pediatrics.
Funds to Enhance Access/Retention in HIV Care for Women of Color: January 9 Deadline
The SPNS Women of Color Initiative will award funds for up to 5 years to support organizations that implement and evaluate effective, evidence-based interventions designed to improve timely entry, access to, and retention into quality HIV care aimed primarily at women of color. Funds are available for demonstration site projects in two categories: urban settings (Category A) and non-urban settings (Category B).
Grants under this funding announcement will be made to severely underserved areas that contain high populations of HIV-positive women of color. Awarded sites will identify effective models of care that provide innovative strategies to overcome barriers across the spectrum of engagement and retention in care. Funds will support activities that demonstrate they are replicable in other similar localities. Specifically, programs should address the following:
Linkage into quality HIV care;
Retention once engaged in quality HIV in care; and
Re-linkage to quality HIV care after falling out of care.
Up to 10 demonstration grants will be funded, with an equal number in each of the two categories. A maximum grant award of $400,000 per year will be provided. Funds are also expected to be available to fund one Evaluation and Technical Assistance Center to conduct a multi-site evaluation of services and provide technical assistance and support to the demonstration projects.
CAREWare-Lite for New Users
A new version of CAREWare, specifically designed for new users, is now available. This version allows new users to install the software and boot up with little to no setup and begin entering data immediately. It is designed for agencies that currently do not have any electronic health information system running. A short user guide is available to help new users get started.
New Face of Ryan White on TARGET Center: Louisiana’s Ceryl Besch
Seven individuals were recognized for their exceptional Ryan White work at the August 2008 Ryan White Grantee Meeting, including Ceryl Besch, MD, HIV Division Director of HIV Outpatient Program, Medical Center of Louisiana at New Orleans. Dr. Besch was the Part C Gabe Kruks award winner given her work in promoting Early Intervention Services work in her area. (Gabe Kruks died in November 1992 at the age of 42 and was a tireless strategist and policy advocate for street youth and people with AIDS in the city of Los Angeles.)

International Conference on HIV Treatment Adherence: Call for Abstracts, December 1 Deadline
The fourth International Conference on HIV Treatment Adherence will take place April 5-7 in Miami. The goal of this conference is to provide an international forum for the presentation and discussion of state-of-the-science HIV treatment adherence research, as well as current behavioral and clinical perspectives in practicum. The conference is sponsored by International Association of Physicians in AIDS Care and the National Institute of Mental Health.
Abstracts must be submitted online by December 1, 2008. Submitted abstracts, including late breakers, will be considered for oral and poster presentations. Submitted abstracts should report information not previously published, or intended to be published, prior to April 5, 2009.
World AIDS Day: December 1
World AIDS Day is observed every year on December 1st. The World Health Organization established World AIDS Day in 1988 and this year will mark the 20th observation. World AIDS Day provides governments, national AIDS programs, faith organizations, community organizations, and individuals with an opportunity to raise awareness and focus attention on the global AIDS epidemic. infoSIDA Redesigns Guidelines Pages
The guidelines pages of infoSIDA, the Spanish-language companion site to AIDSinfo, have been redesigned. While the guidelines are not available in Spanish, the new guidelines pages have been updated with a user-friendly format. There is a dedicated page for each of the guidelines, which includes a Spanish-language fact sheets for each
guidelines.
