These statements reflect a panel's assessment of the relevant medical knowledge available at the time each statement was written. Thus, each provides a "snapshot in time" of the state of knowledge on the conference topic. When reading the statements, keep in mind that new knowledge is inevitably accumulating through medical research, and that the information provided is not a substitute for professional medical care or advice.

Link to Archive of Older Conference Statements

The Archive of Older Conference Statements is  provided solely for historical purposes. Due to the cumulative nature of medical research, new knowledge has inevitably accumulated in these subject areas in the time since these statements were prepared. Thus some of the material is likely to be out of date, and at worst simply wrong. The statements may, however, continue to be useful to the research community as a reference for understanding what was known about a topic at a particular point in time, including whether gaps in research identified at the time of each conference have since been filled. It is for this purpose that the conference statements will remain available in this format indefinitely. For reliable, current information on these and other health topics, we recommend consulting the National Institutes of Health's MedlinePlus http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/.

1 = The NIH Consensus or State-of-the-Science statement is made available in DRAFT form on the final day of the conference and the final statement becomes available 4-6 weeks postconference. NIH Consensus and State-of-the-Science statements are prepared by independent panels of health professionals and public representatives on the basis of (1) the results of a systematic literature review prepared under contract with the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), (2) presentations by investigators working in areas relevant to the conference questions during a 2-day public session, (3) questions and statements from conference attendees during open discussion periods that are part of the public session, and (4) closed deliberations by the panel during the remainder of the second day and morning of the third. This statement is an independent report of the panel and is not a policy statement of the NIH or the Federal Government. The statement reflects the panel's assessment of medical knowledge available at the time the statement was written. Thus, it provides a "snapshot in time" of the state of knowledge on the conference topic. When reading the statement, keep in mind that new knowledge is inevitably accumulating through medical research.

2 = The conferences are webcast live and then archived for use after the conference. To view the webcast you need to download the free "Realplayer"  browser plugin application. To view an upcoming conference, go to our home page (http://consensus.nih.gov) on the day of the conference and there will be a link to the webcast. Alternately go to http://videocast.nih.gov on conference day and they will have a link as well.

3 = A press conference is held on the third day of the conference and an NIH press release is made available.

4 = A printed Program and Abstract book is prepared for each conference, this document  includes the agenda, panel roster, speaker roster, and speaker abstracts.

5 = The Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (http://www.ahrq.gov) prepares a Systematic Literature Review of the topic for use by the panel. This report is made available, along with the Panel's statement on the third and final day of the conference.
