Updated! Working Together to Manage Diabetes: A Guide for Pharmacists, Podiatrists, Optometrists, and Dental Professionals

Working Together to Manage Diabetes: A Guide for Pharmacy, Podiatry, Optometry, and Dental Professionals publication coverSeveral revised products for health care professionals are now available from NDEP! Working Together to Manage Diabetes: A Guide for Pharmacists, Podiatrists, Optometrists, and Dental Professionals is an interdisciplinary primer that focuses on diabetes-related conditions affecting the foot, eye, and mouth, as well as the issues related to drug therapy management. Working Together to Manage Diabetes promotes a team approach to comprehensive diabetes care and provides simple care recommendations to clinicians about making cross-disciplinary treatment referrals. The primer has been revised to include the latest statistics; a new section on primary diabetes prevention that outlines results from the Diabetes Prevention Program study; and the role pharmacy, podiatry, optometry, and dental professionals can play to prevent diabetes in those at risk.The primer also includes clinical images that highlight common conditions affecting foot, eye, and oral health as well as the role of pharmacy in diabetes management.

Working Together to Manage Diabetes: Diabetes Medications Supplement publication coverA companion piece to the primer, Diabetes Medications Supplement provides a “snapshot” profile of diabetes medications, insulin medications, and medications for controlling glycemia, high blood cholesterol, and blood pressure. Revised patient education posters, available in English and Spanish, can be used by health care professionals in exam or waiting rooms to help educate patients on specific steps they can take in collaboration with their pharmacists, eye, foot, and dental care professionals to control diabetes.

Working Together to Manage Diabetes Continuing Education/Optometry Credits

Continuing Education (CE)Continuing education (CE) credit for health care professionals will soon be available for reading Working Together to Manage Diabetes: A Guide for Pharmacy, Podiatry, Optometry, and Dental Professionals and its English poster. Stay tuned to www.cdc.gov/diabetes/ndep/continuing_education.htm for updates on obtaining CE credits. The site will be activated when credits are available. Optometry credits will also be available through the American Optometric Association.

 


NDEP Wins 2007 CDC/DHPE National/Regional Collaboration Award!

DHPE logoNDEP has been awarded the 2007 Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s Directors of Health Promotion and Education (DHPE) Award for National/Regional Collaboration! This award honors national or regional group efforts that have resulted in evidence of collaboration between state or community level constituents in demonstrating innovative health education and health promotion practices at the national level. Special thanks go to Ann Thurland, M.P.H., C.H.E.S., Program Director for the Virgin Islands Diabetes Prevention and Control Program, who nominated NDEP for this award.

 


NDEP’sOne Call. One Click. Awareness Campaign

One Call One ClickOne Call. One Click. is NDEP’s first-ever awareness campaign to promote NDEP as "Your Source of Free Diabetes Information" in the next decade. As part of NDEP's new effort to "promote, promote, promote," new One Call. One Click. media kits will be distributed in late July to general media, health care professional media, and you – our partners! Media kits will include new print, online, and radio PSAs in English and Spanish. Look for more information about the One Call. One Click. campaign and how you’ll be able to use the campaign’s media kits in the August issue of News & Notes.

NDEP is promoting diabetes prevention this summer through a new feature article, “Preventing Type 2 Diabetes When You’re On-the-Go” that describes how to fit physical activity and healthy eating into your travel plans. With a little effort, you can stay healthy while you’re on the road – the key is small steps that lead to big rewards. In each issue of News & Notes look for NDEP promotional tools that are ready for you to personalize, customize, and distribute.

By using our promotional tools, everybody wins. Your community newspaper receives a localized story with important health information for its readers, your organization receives good publicity, and you help NDEP continue to be the nation’s No. 1 resource for free information and materials on diabetes control and prevention. Each issue of News & Notes features tools that tie into the following month’s promotions and can help us promote NDEP together.

August promotions will embrace back-to-school themes as kids and teens prepare to start the new school year. NDEP will promote Helping the Student with Diabetes Succeed: A Guide for School Personnel, a comprehensive guide designed to empower school personnel, parents, and students to create a safe learning environment and equal access to educational opportunities for all children with diabetes. Use our feature article, “Guide Designed to Help Schools Manage Diabetes in Students,” and product announcement to help promote the School Guide.

September promotions will celebrate Hispanic Heritage Month and National Cholesterol Education Month. A feature article emphasizing the importance of managing the ABCs of diabetes will target Hispanic/Latinos with diabetes.

NDEP Chair Dr. Lawrence Blonde Interviewed on NIH Radio

NIH Radio BannerLawrence Blonde, M.D., F.A.C.P, F.A.C.E., Chair of the National Diabetes Education Program, recently promoted the link between diabetes and cardiovascular disease on NIH radio during National Men’s Health Week. Wisconsin DPCP Hosts DiabetesAtWork Corporate Breakfast Meetings

DiabetesAtWork.org websiteThis spring, the Wisconsin Diabetes Prevention and Control Program (DPCP) held a series of DiabetesAtWork corporate breakfast meetings across the state in Janesville, Waukesha, Green Bay, Stevens Point, and La Crosse. The meetings, entitled “Putting Diabetes Prevention and Management to Work,” were designed to present the business case to employers and to showcase the DiabetesAtWork web-based resource. Each corporate breakfast site also featured a local certified diabetes educator covering “Diabetes 101,” Pamela Geis of the Wisconsin DPCP presented in-depth information about DiabetesAtWork, and a wellness coordinator from a local corporation shared “Worksite Wellness in Action.” After each meeting, participants are added to a database and sent information about diabetes and other chronic disease worksite wellness programs, as well as NDEP materials and campaigns. Congratulations to the Wisconsin DPCP for a great program!

 


The Diabetes Initiative programAADE Publishes Special Issue of The Diabetes Educator

The American Association of Diabetes Educators (AADE) will publish a special supplemental issue of The Diabetes Educator, featuring lessons learned from the Diabetes Initiative, a national program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation.
