Brevard County Most Wanted Arrested in Mexico

Orlando, FL - The U.S. Marshals - Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force announced the arrest of Anthony D. Scarfone, 23, a previously convicted sex offender and one of Brevard Counties Most Wanted. Scarfone was wanted by the Brevard County Sheriff’s Office for 9 counts of Capital Sexual Battery, and 5 counts of Lewd & Lascivious on a minor under the age of 16. Scarfone was arrested on Tuesday, December 23, 2008, working at a hotel in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico.

Scarfone was originally convicted in Brevard County in 2003 for Sexual Battery on a Minor Under the age of 16. He was sentenced to 5 years of state supervised probation. U.S. Marshal’s office in Arizona and Mexico were contacted with this information. The instant offense allegedly occurred in 2004 and 2005 in Brevard County.

Brevard County Sheriff’s Office requested the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service in locating and arresting Scarfone. The Florida Regional - Fugitive Task Force in Orlando developed information that Scarfone may have fled the Central Florida area to Puerto Penasco, Senora, Mexico. U.S. Marshals in Arizona relayed the information to the Sonora State Investigative Police and to the Sonora National Institute of Immigration.

On December 6, 2008 Scarfone was detained by Mexican authorities in Puerto Penasco and was able to convince authorities that he was a Mexican National, by producing a false Mexico voter ID card and a false Mexico birth certificate. Scarfone then fled the area for the interior of Mexico. Further investigation by Mexican authorities revealed that Scarfone was working at a hotel in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, Mexico, and assistance was requested from Sinaloa Law Enforcement, UNESA which is the Sinaloa State Specialized Apprehension Unit. UNESA agents from Culiacan and Mazatlan coordinated their investigative efforts with the information provided and Scarfone was arrested without incident in Mazatlan. The Mexico National Institute of Immigration, Mazatlan deported Scarfone to the U.S. as an undesirable where he is awaiting extradition back to Brevard County to face these charges.

Each year, fugitive investigations carried out by United States Marshals lead task force result in the apprehension of approximately 34,000 federal fugitives. In fact, more federal fugitives are arrested by U.S. Marshals than all other federal agencies combined. The U.S. Marshals - Florida Regional Fugitive Task Force, is a multi-agency team comprised of officers from Orlando Police Department, Palm Bay Police Department, Florida Department of Law Enforcement, Orange, Seminole, and Brevard County Sheriff’s Offices. The objective of this task force is to locate and apprehend Central Florida’s most violent fugitives and sex offenders.
