The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force Announces Operation "Spring Cleaning"

Del Rio – On May 30, 2007, at 7:00 am, Lone Star Fugitive Task Force officers from nine participating federal, state, and local law enforcement agencies began an intensive one-day operation. Operation Spring Cleaning focused on the apprehension of felons either wanted for crimes of violence or having a history of violent crime. The primary goal of the operation was to put fugitives on notice that law enforcement will work together to assure that they are brought to justice.

As of this morning, over fifty-percent of the fugitives targeted during Operation Spring Cleaning are in custody. The targeted fugitives were wanted for crimes such as family violence, assault, evading arrest, burglary, and narcotics. This joint effort far surpassed the national average for arrests in similar operations.

One key reason for the success was the utilization of a new and improved communication system. Val Verde County Sheriff A. D'wayne Jernigan was instrumental in obtaining a federal grant for the acquisition and implementation of a one-of-a-kind communication system capable of covering fourteen counties in the greater Middle Rio Grande area.

United States Marshal for the Western District of Texas LaFayfette Collins stated, “Communication is the single most powerful tool in law enforcement. Thanks to Sheriff Jernigan’s efforts, the safety and effectiveness of law enforcement throughout the Middle Rio Grande area are now an example for the rest of the country.”
