THE LONE STAR FUGITIVE TASK FORCE ARRESTS POLICE SHOOTER

Lone Star Fugitive Task Force LogoSan Antonio – The United States Marshals Service sponsored Lone Star Fugitive Task Force (LSFTF) arrested Jose Miguel Gonzalez late Sunday afternoon at the same apartment complex where this case started. Jose Gonzalez is the suspect charged with the Attempted Capital Murder of Veteran San Antonio Police Officer, Richard Ruiz.

On Thursday, July 26, 2007 at approximately 11:30 p.m., Officer Ruiz responded to a disturbance call at 4243 West Commerce Street, San Antonio, Texas. Upon arrival, Officer Ruiz approached a man later identified as 30 year old Jose Miguel Gonzalez. While Officer Ruiz was walking from his vehicle, Gonzalez opened fire with a large caliber handgun, striking Officer Ruiz twice. Officer Ruiz was able to return fire and called for assistance on his police radio at which time Gonzalez fled the scene. Officer Ruiz Task Force Members Subduing Jose Miguel Gonzalezwas later transported to a hospital for gunshot wounds. The LSFTF was called for assistance approximately two hours after the shooting took place. Task force members responded and the manhunt was initiated. LSFTF members made a commitment to direct all of their resources and expertise into finding this extremely dangerous individual. On Sunday afternoon, July 29, 2007, LSFTF members believed they had Gonzalez holed up in his mother’s apartment. A tactical plan was developed and task force members made entry into the residence, finding Gonzalez lying in bed. As the arrest team entered the bedroom with ballistic shields out front, Gonzalez tried to rise up but he was unsuccessful. After securing Gonzalez, task force members located a large caliber handgun underneath the bedding.

The United States Marshal for the Western District of Texas LaFayette Collins said, “The entire police fraternity is resting a little easier today knowing this individual is behind bars. The Lone Star Fugitive Task Force members are to be commended for their tremendous dedication to apprehending dangerous individuals such as this. Their family members are to be acknowledged as well, since they are unwittingly subjected to the stress and worry of their loved ones in going after potential “cop killers” like Gonzalez.”
