THE LONE STAR FUGITIVE TASK FORCE ARRESTS POLICE SHOOTER
San
Antonio – The United States Marshals Service sponsored Lone Star
Fugitive Task Force (LSFTF) arrested Jose Miguel Gonzalez late
Sunday afternoon at the same apartment complex where this case
started. Jose Gonzalez is the suspect charged with the Attempted
Capital Murder of Veteran San Antonio Police Officer, Richard Ruiz.
On Thursday, July 26, 2007 at approximately 11:30 p.m., Officer Ruiz
responded to a disturbance call at 4243 West Commerce Street, San
Antonio, Texas. Upon arrival, Officer Ruiz approached a man later
identified as 30 year old Jose Miguel Gonzalez. While Officer Ruiz
was walking from his vehicle, Gonzalez opened fire with a large
caliber handgun, striking Officer Ruiz twice. Officer Ruiz was able
to return fire and called for assistance on his police radio at
which time Gonzalez fled the scene. Officer Ruiz
was later
transported to a hospital for gunshot wounds. The LSFTF was called
for assistance approximately two hours after the shooting took
place. Task force members responded and the manhunt was initiated.
LSFTF members made a commitment to direct all of their resources and
expertise into finding this extremely dangerous individual. On
Sunday afternoon, July 29, 2007, LSFTF members believed they had
Gonzalez holed up in his mother’s apartment. A tactical plan was
developed and task force members made entry into the residence,
finding Gonzalez lying in bed. As the arrest team entered the
bedroom with ballistic shields out front, Gonzalez tried to rise up
but he was unsuccessful. After securing Gonzalez, task force members
located a large caliber handgun underneath the bedding.
The United States Marshal for the Western District of Texas
LaFayette Collins said, “The entire police fraternity is resting a
little easier today knowing this individual is behind bars. The Lone
Star Fugitive Task Force members are to be commended for their
tremendous dedication to apprehending dangerous individuals such as
this. Their family members are to be acknowledged as well, since
they are unwittingly subjected to the stress and worry of their
loved ones in going after potential “cop killers” like Gonzalez.”
