Violent Murder Suspect Captured After Vehicle Chase and Shooting

 
Atlanta, GA - At approximately 5:45pm on January 12, 2007, Tywan Lamont Williams was captured by members of the U.S. Marshal’s Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force and the Cobb County Police Department. Williams is wanted in Durham, NC for a 1997 murder and by the Cobb County Sheriff’s Department for a felony probation violation.

This afternoon during an extensive surveillance, investigators from the U.S. Marshals Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force were able to locate Williams. After following the suspect, they attempted to arrest him at a local gas station on Northside Drive. During the attempted arrest, Williams rammed several law enforcement vehicles while attempting to escape capture.

Williams was able to force his way out of the gas station and then attempted to flee on I-285. During his attempted flight he continued to use his vehicle as a weapon in an attempt to escape capture, during this assault an Inspector with the United States Marshal’s Service shot Williams. Williams was transported to a local hospital and is in stable condition. The USMS Inspector involved in the shooting is also being treated locally.

Williams has an extensive criminal history that includes convictions for both drug distribution and weapons violations. The Marshals Service considered Williams to be armed and dangerous.

The Sandy Springs Police Department will be conducting the investigation into the shooting and the USMS Inspector involved will be placed on routine admin leave.

The Southeast Regional Fugitive Task Force (SERFTF) is a team comprised of law enforcement officers from the United States Marshal, as well as, 27 other local, state and federal agencies. The task force’s objective is to seek out and arrest the regions most violent offenders. Since the inception of the task force in September of 2003, the SERFTF has closed over 9100 felony warrants. Annually, more fugitives are arrested by U.S. Marshals than all other federal agencies combined.
