Interior Outfitting Begins: From Winches to Wires

After a successful September launch, interior outfitting of the FSV Bell M. Shimada continues in preparation for acceptance trials in the spring of 2009. Outfitting involves welding down winches, setting up miles of electrical wiring, installing net reels, and developing laboratory spaces including the acoustic lab—the “nerve center” of the vessel. When complete, the FSV Bell M. Shimada will be one of the world’s most highly sophisticated fisheries research platforms, used by NWFSC scientists to conduct groundfish surveys, ecosystem surveys, marine mammal surveys, and other critical research.
