Director’s Corner December 12, 2008

The NWFSC has a long history in conservation genetics, and over the past 30 years has emerged as a nationally-recognized leader in the field. |
I’m very pleased that the journal Fish and Fisheries has published a special edition on fishery genetics this month. This special issue speaks to the importance of genetic research and the strong scientific stature of the guest editors, which includes our own Robin Waples. |
The issue was inspired in part by the "Six Decades in Fishery Genetics" symposium in 2007 organized by the NWFSC and University of Washington, and the work of Fred Utter, a pioneer in the field who began his career at Montlake in 1953. |
Thanks and congratulations to Robin and his co–editors! |

Check out our website for more information about our work and stay tuned for highlights of our annual accomplishments at the end of the year. |

Reflecting on the year 2008, I am sure you feel as proud as I do of our Center’s accomplishments in many fields as shown by publications, conferences, Seminar series and visitors, and your participation in many activities in the fields of science, technology, human capital development, infrastructure, safety, green initiative and charitable contributions. In each area, you have made the Center and our agency better because of your outstanding efforts. |
As we move into the Holiday season and begin the next year, we will be facing many changes because of the new leadership in our agency at various levels and the need to be prepared with new initiatives. So it is important we take this time to be with our families and friends and enjoy the holidays safely. |
I thank you for your excellent contributions, your ‘can–do’ attitude and your generosity. |
Bob Iwamoto, John Stein and I wish you all a very Happy Holiday season and the very best in the New Year! |
