Biography

Mary J. Mitchell

Ms. Mary Mitchell is the Deputy Associate Administrator of the Office of Electronic Commerce in GSA's Office of Governmentwide Policy. Ms. Mitchell is responsible for supporting, coordinating, and monitoring the U.S. Government's implementation of electronic commerce (EC). Key focus areas of the office include electronic catalogs, smart card technology, electronic grants, and EC security. She is also co-chair of the Federal Electronic Commerce Program Office with the Department of Defense. The program office provides central leadership and management for the use of EC in the Federal Government.

Prior to joining GSA, Mitchell served as a Program Manager in the Information Technology and Applications Office of the Advanced Technology Program at the Department of Commerce's National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST). Mitchell managed an information technology program and worked with industry to define promising technology investments in areas such as electronic commerce, supply-chain integration, engineering design, and advance learning technology. She also represented NIST on the cross-agency Electronic Commerce Task Force. Prior to this, she led a group that contributed to the development of international standards for product data representation and part libraries (ISO 10303, also known as STEP, and ISO 13584). She was one of the principal contributors to the architecture and testing methodology used with these standards.   intelligent control, and intelligent engineering design. She also managed advance learning technology projects. Mitchell joined the National Bureau of Standards (the predecessor to NIST) in 1982.

Mitchell has received numerous public and private sector awards including the Department of Commerce Silver Medal Award in 1994. Mary received a  B.S. degree from Michigan State University in 1975 and is working toward a M.S. in Engineering Management at George Washington University.
