Function and Use: The agency created this system as a management tool to monitor the status of the sites and to conduct analyses. Until 1987, these records were maintained by the Natural Landmarks Division of the Office of the Associate Director for Science and Technology. They were then maintained until 1996, by the Interagency Resources Division of the Office of the Associate Director for Cultural Resources. The records were then maintained until 2001, by the Wildlife and Vegetation Division of the Office of the Associate Director for Natural Resources. The Natural Resource Information Division of the Office of the Associate Director for Natural Resource Stewardship and Science assumed responsibility for them the following year.
Scope & Content Note: This series contains data on ecological and geological sites designated as National Natural Landmarks or sites that have been identified as having the potential to be natural monuments. Both the designated and proposed sites are considered the best examples of biological and geological features in both public and private ownership. A small percentage of these locations have been designated as Natural Landmarks, and only a few of these are part of a national park. The records identify the natural landmark's name, state and county, size, the agency's steps in securing designation, and the dates of actions. Other files contain information about the development of natural history studies, landowners, resource issues, and agency correspondence. The 2004 version of the data contains the same data as the 2002 version, with changes made to comply with 36 CFR Part 62, National Natural Landmarks Program, Final Rule of May 12, 1999.
Access Restrictions: Restricted - Partly. FOIA (b)(6) Personal Information. This series includes partially restricted files. A public use version of the two restricted files is available for researchers.
General Note: The name of the system that produced these records was the Natural Landmarks System. Its acronym "NLS" is used by both the agency and NARA when referring to the series and its contents.
The landowner name and address variables are masked if the owners are private persons but are not masked for institutional or government landowners.
