American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) Announces Availability of Public Health Informatics Training

American Medical Informatics Association
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recently launched a 5-year cooperative agreement with the American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA) funded by the Office of the National Center for Public Health Informatics (NCPHI) and the Office of the Director, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (ODCDC). The purpose of the program is to strengthen the breadth and depth of the public health workforce by providing training in public health informatics. As a first step AMIA will be accepting applications from leaders in national, state or local public health agencies interested in participating in informatics training.

What will be offered?

Courses are offered in two parts: an 11-12- week Web-based component and a one day in-person session held in conjunction with an AMIA meeting. The program includes readings, lectures, interactive discussion, and self-assessments. Continuing education is available and varies by program. In-person sessions provide an opportunity for students to interact in-person with faculty who are luminaries in the field of informatics. Participants can also receive: one day of tutorials at an AMIA Annual Symposium; an AMIA membership for the year; and an AMIA 10x10 Completion Certificate once the program is completed.

Who is Eligible to Apply?

Participants should have an advanced degree in the health or medical field and at least 3-5 years prior work experience in public health at the national, state or local level. The common denominator for participants is they seek to acquire new competencies and skills that place them in a position to face and contribute to the changing world of public health using informatics. Course enrollment may be limited by space constraints. Since this is the first offering of this program we do not yet know how many people will be applying. Applicants will be notified of the enrollment/admission decision as soon as possible.

How do I Apply?

Interested public health workers will need to complete and submit an application form in accordance with the application instructions and deadline. The applications are available on line at the AMIA web site (http://www.amia.org/home/news.asp#cdc_10x10)

How Much does it Cost?

Tuition fees for the course will be paid by the CDC. Participants will be responsible for arranging their own transportation, hotel and food expenses for the in-person session. This is not included in tuition. Participants will also be responsible for any out of pocket costs associated with the coursework (such as books, internet fees, and telephone costs).
