Use

Use the PedNSS and PNSS Summary Health Indicator Trend tables to monitor patterns in the prevalence of health indicators. Information in these tables can help to identify health indicators that improve or worsen over time. These tables include all years that the contributor has participated in PedNSS or PNSS.

PedNSS Summary Health Indicator Trend tables include:

  • Table 12, Summary of Trends in Growth and Anemia Indicators
  • Table 13, Summary of Trends in Breastfeeding Indicators

PNSS Summary Health Indicator Trend tables include:

  • Table 16, Summary of Trends in Maternal Health Indicators
  • Table 17, Summary of Trends in Maternal Behavioral Indicators
  • Table 18, Summary of Trends in Smoking Indicators
  • Table 19, Summary of Trends in Infant Health Indicators

These tables can be used to answer questions such as:

  • Is the prevalence of low birthweight, short stature, overweight, underweight, and anemia increasing, decreasing, or remaining stable from one year to the next?

Interpreting the Data

The following paragraphs provide general information about the table data that will help you with interpretation.

Title
For PedNSS and PNSS, the table titles show the health indicator or group of health indicators that are analyzed in the table.  For PNSS, the table title includes a group of health indicators but only selected health indicators are included in the group.
Review the PNSS table titles.

1 Data start with the most recent year.
2 Note that Anemia prevalence (%) improved more than other health indicators during the 6-year period from 1997 to 2002 with a 5% decrease (from 16.9% to 11.9%).

A health indicator that worsened during the same time period was the prevalence of Overweight (defined as > 95th) among children > 2 years of age which increased 0.8% (from 13.2% to 14.0%).
