Age and race/ethnicity are the person characteristics included in PedNSS that can help describe which children are more likely to be overweight. The PedNSS Table 8C, Growth and Anemia Indicators by Race/Ethnicity and Age, is used to determine if the prevalence of overweight varies by race/ethnicity or age.

Sample:  PedNSS Table 8C, Growth and Anemia Indicators by Race/Ethnicity and Age

table showing >= 2 years overweight data stratified by race/ethnicity

1 Overweight does vary by race and ethnic groups. Hispanic children have the highest prevalence of overweight among children 2 to 5 years of age (17.5%).

The graph below, derived from Table 8C, shows the prevalence of overweight for each racial/ethnic group as well as the Total or overall prevalence for the state. Hispanic children aged 2 to 5 years of age have the highest prevalence.

* Overweight: > 95th percentile weight-for-length or BMI-for-age; at risk of overweight: > 85th-<95th percentile weight-for-length or BMI-for-age, CDC Growth Charts, 2000. 15% of children are expected to fall above the 85th percentile (5% above the 95th percentile and 10% between the 85th and 95th percentiles).

Who is affected?

Hispanic children have the highest prevalence of overweight for children 2 to 5 years of age.
