Doxycycline (and tetracycline) is, among these
drugs, the one that would cause the most concern, because of
the risk of adverse effects on the fetus (discoloration and
dysplasia of the teeth and inhibition of bone growth). Clindamycin
or sulfadoxine-pyrimethamine may be administered (instead of
doxycycline) in conjunction with quinine in the treatment of
severe malaria in pregnant women.
