Detailed Diagnoses
and Procedures, National Hospital Discharge Survey, 1996
A
compilation of hospital utilization statistics for 1996 has been published by the National
Center for Health Statistics (NCHS). These comprehensive hospitalization data are
presented by NCHS annually in the report, "Detailed Diagnoses and Procedures,
National Hospital Discharge Survey."
The
1996 edition of the report presents statistics on diagnosed conditions and surgical and
nonsurgical procedures performed in non-Federal short-stay hospitals. Diagnoses and
procedures presented are coded according to the International Classification of Diseases,
9th Revision, Clinical Modification or ICD-9-CM. Data are shown by age and sex of the
patient and by geographic region of the hospitals. The report is intended as a source
document for researchers and others who need for detailed diagnostic and procedure
categories.
The
data for this report are collected as part of NCHS National Hospital Discharge
Survey which has been conducted annually since 1965. Approximately 480 hospitals
participated in the 1996 survey. Statistics were derived from a sample of 282,000 medical
records.
