Data Files

The data files are provided in both ASCII and SAS Transport formats. There are 94,624 records in the county data set and 118,637 records in the MMSA data set. BRFSS and BRFSS GIS Maps data and documentation are also available for this data year.

2002 SMART BRFSS County Data (ASCII)
Data Released November 18, 2003

This file is in ASCII format. It has a fixed record length of 954 positions.

2002 SMART BRFSS County Data (SAS Transport Format)
Data Released November 18, 2003

This file was exported from SAS V8.2 in the XPT transport format. This file contains 310 variables. This format can be imported into SPSS or STATA. Please note: some of the variable labels become truncated in the process of converting to the XPT format so they may be slightly different from what is on the County_SASOUT02.SAS program.

File Formats

A word about file formats: The BRFSS Survey Data and documentation are available in several different file formats. Each available format is described below.
Icon Representing RTF Files Rich Text Format File (RTF). This format contains plain text and allows for basic formatting. Use a word processor to view and edit these files.
Icon Representing ZIP Files Zip Archive File (ZIP). The zip format contains one or more files within it and is compressed to minimize the file's size. Use any zip utility to unzip these archives.
Icon Representing SAS Files SAS Instruction File (SAS). This format contains plain text which can be edited with a text editor. The instructions are intended for statistical analysis software developed by SAS Institute, Inc.
Icon Representing SAS Files SAS Version 8 Catalog File (SAS7BCAT). This format requires the use of statistical analysis software developed by SAS Institute, Inc.
Icon Representing SAS Files SAS Version 8 Datasets File (SAS7BDAT). This format requires the use of statistical analysis software developed by SAS Institute, Inc.
Icon Representing XPT Files SAS Transport File (XPT). This format allows data sets created by the SAS software to be imported directly into other statistical software such as Stata or SPSS.
Icon Representing PDF Files Portable Document Format File (PDF). This format allows formatting that enables full document navigation. You will need Acrobat Reader (a free application) to view and print this document.
Icon Representing TXT Files Plain Text File (TXT). This format contains simple text. Use any text editor to view and edit these files.
Icon Representing comma-separated values files CSV Instruction File (CSV). This format is a comma-delimited text file which can be imported by most analysis software.
