House Approves Andrews Plan to Require Defense Department to ‘Go Green’

The House of Representatives recently approved a plan I authored that requires the Department of Defense to produce or procure at least 25% of its electrical energy from renewable sources by the year 2025.  This will make our nation more secure by reducing our reliance on foreign oil.  Additionally, by expanding the domestic market for renewable fuels and reducing the Pentagon's use of fossil fuels, this policy is an important step in our effort to combat global warming.  We must take concrete actions to address both the real and present danger of Middle East terrorism and the increasing crisis of global warming. I believe this amendment is an important step to addressing both.

Currently the Department of Defense only uses about 9% renewable energy.  My amendment will require a significant increase, but will also take into account energy needed for combat operations.  Our troops on the ground are exempt from my amendment so that we ensure that they have the power and resources they need to defend our nation.

Middle Eastern terrorism and global warming are very different, but very significant threats to our national security that are both tied to our reliance on foreign oil.  My amendment will require the Department of Defense to take important steps that address both of these issues by reducing our reliance on oil from the Middle East.  I am pleased the House voted to include my amendment in the National Defense Authorization Act and I look forward to continuing the effort to increase our nation’s commitment to renewable energy.
