East Haven, Connecticut Celebrates Project Impact At Signing Ceremony

Boston, MA -- The Town of East Haven, Connecticut has joined Project Impact: Building a Disaster Resistant Community, the Federal Emergency Management Agency's (FEMA) national initiative dedicated to changing the way America deals with disasters. East Haven Mayor Joseph Maturo and Congresswoman Rosa DeLauro were joined at the Signing Ceremony by FEMA Associate Director for Mitigation Michael J. Armstrong and Regional Director Setti D. Warren, John Wiltse, Director of the Connecticut Office of Emergency Management, the State Department of Environmental Protection and a variety of state and local officials, business partners and community organizations.
"I am pleased that the Town of East Haven has joined the network of Project Impact communities in New England," said FEMA Director Michael J. Armstrong. "The Town, it's leadership and its partners have developed several emergency management policies and mitigation initiatives to ensure the quality of life and promote economic stability in East Haven," Armstrong added.
Project Impact was launched by FEMA in October 1997 to urge citizens, government officials and the business community to take actions to make their communities more disaster- resistant. Currently there are over 200 Project Impact communities across the nation and over 1200 business partners.
"The Town of East Haven has undertaken aggressive measures prior to a natural hazard event to decrease the amount of damage sustained by residents, businesses and the community," said Setti D. Warren, Regional Director at FEMA Region I in Boston. "I know that the citizens of East Haven will benefit from tremendously from becoming a disaster resistant community and take this opportunity to share this knowledge and their future successes with other communities in the State of Connecticut, said Warren"
At least one community from each state has now taken action to reduce the effects of natural disasters. By joining the effort of Project Impact, the Town of East Haven commits itself to taking actions in advance of a disaster. East Haven is developing a multi-hazard loss reduction implementation strategy to reduce vulnerability to hurricanes, flooding and all other natural disasters that pose a threat to the community.
