TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- Monday, Jan. 4, is the last day for anyone in the declared counties who suffered damages during Tropical Storm Mitch to register for federal/state aid.
The declaration for Mitch included Monroe and Palm Beach counties for individual assistance and Monroe County only for public assistance.
"With less than one week to file for assistance, we are urging any resident or business owner who has not yet made application to do so immediately," said Federal Coordinating Officer Paul W. Fay, Jr., of the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA).
The toll-free FEMA application number is 1-800-462-9029, or 1-800-462-7585 for those with hearing or speech impairments.
The application deadline also applies to anyone seeking a U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) low-interest loan.
Fay said persons who already have filed for assistance for Mitch damages may continue to receive help on the status of their applications after the Monday registration deadline. Follow-up calls can be made to the toll-free FEMA Helpline. That number is 1-800-525-0321, or 1-800-660-8005 for those with hearing or speech impairments.
