ORLANDO, Fla. -- The Disaster Recovery Centers (DRCs) operating in South Florida will no longer be open weekends. Normal hours for the centers are 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday until further notice, according to the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) and the Florida State Emergency Response Team (SERT).

In addition, the DRC located at the Career & Service Center in Immokalee in Collier County will cease operations at the close of business on Friday, Dec. 30. To date, this DRC had served more than 1,900 residents.

Disaster Recovery Centers offer many types of recovery information and provide a single location where people are able to talk face-to-face with disaster recovery specialists. No cash, checks, debit cards or vouchers are distributed at DRCs. Visitors can receive help filling out disaster loan applications from the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) or check on the status of their disaster assistance application.

To apply for federal disaster assistance, residents must first register with FEMA. There are two ways to register: log on to www.fema.gov or call FEMA's toll-free number, 1-800-621-FEMA (3362), or TTY 1-800-462-7585 for those with speech or hearing impairment. Both numbers are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week until further notice. The final day to apply for assistance is Thursday, Jan. 5, 2006.

Eight weeks after 13 Florida counties were designated for Individual Assistance under President Bush's disaster declaration of Oct. 24, DRCs across the affected area had served more than 126,000 residents.
