Baton Rouge, LA -- State, Federal, local and voluntary agencies are working in partnership to help Louisiana residents recover from the recent flooding. Following is a summary of ongoing response and recovery efforts as of noon, Wednesday, October 2, 2002. The Louisiana Office of Emergency Preparedness (LOEP) and the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) will update this information on a daily basis from their Joint Information Center in Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
- Registrations for assistance through FEMA's toll-free registration line total 18,943 and include the following:
- Iberia Parish, 4
- Jefferson Parish, 2,445
- Lafourche Parish, 122
- Livingston Parish, 47
- Orleans Parish, 12,618
- Plaquemines Parish, 103
- St.Bernard Parish, 529
- St. Charles Parish, 322
- St. John The Baptist Parish, 230
- St. Tammany Parish, 981
- Tangipahoa Parish, 421
- Terrebonne Parish, 948
- The U.S. Small Business Administration has received 4,226 home referrals and 968 business referrals as a result of registrations.
- A total of 1,360 housing assistance applications for $1.2 million have been approved. Housing assistance may include lodging expense reimbursement, emergency minimal repair assistance, temporary rental assistance, and mortgage and rental assistance.
- There have been 2,981 home inspections done and returned to FEMA.
- As of today, plans are for at least four Disaster Recovery Centers (DRC) to open in affected parishes. No date or times have been set due to the impending Hurricane Lili. DRCs are designed to provide applicants with an opportunity to discuss their needs with personnel from state, federal and voluntary organizations who can answer questions and provide recovery information about various programs available to individuals and business owners.
