RICHMOND, Va. -- The only way Virginia residents affected by Tropical Depression Gaston can apply for assistance is by placing a toll-free call to the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA), say disaster recovery officials.

“We want to clear up any confusion about the application process,” said Federal Coordinating Officer Marianne C. Jackson, who heads the federal disaster-recovery effort. “It’s a one-step, one-call process that is completely confidential and can be completed from the privacy of your home. Anyone needing assistance must make the phone call to FEMA but does not have to visit a disaster recovery center to complete the application process.”

Homeowners, renters and business owners seeking assistance with storm-related damage or loss should apply for assistance by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362). Those with speech or hearing impairment can call TTY 1-800-462-7585. Both lines are open 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week until further notice.

People calling FEMA should have at hand their Social Security numbers, current addresses and telephone numbers, dates disaster damages occurred, family gross incomes and insurance information. Those who do not have telephone access can bring this information to any disaster recovery where they may use available phone lines to apply.

“We strongly encourage people to register by telephone before going to a disaster recovery center,” said Michael M. Cline, Virginia Department of Emergency Management (VDEM) coordinator. “With just that one call, individuals can apply for a wide range of disaster assistance including grants for temporary housing and essential home repairs, grants for serious unmet needs, low-interest disaster loans for individuals and business owners, and disaster unemployment assistance.”

After calling FEMA for assistance, applicants can call the same number – 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) – to check on the status of their applications or to get further information on disaster assistance programs and services.

On March 1, 2003, FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security. FEMA's continuing mission within the new department is to lead the effort to prepare the nation for all hazards and effectively manage federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates proactive mitigation activities, trains first responders, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program and the U.S. Fire Administration.
