Wise, VA -- Only two weeks remain for Southwest Virginia residents and businesses affected by the floods of March 17-20 to apply for disaster assistance.
June 1 is the application deadline for residents and businesses in the counties of Dickenson, Lee, Russell, Scott, Smyth, Tazewell, Washington, Wise and the city of Norton. Wythe County is eligible only for Public Assistance (roads, bridges and emergency protective measures). Those who have received U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA) disaster loan applications must also be return them by this deadline.
Federal Coordinating Officer Louis Botta advised March flood victims to call and register. "Even if you have insurance that covers some of the damage, please call and register with us," he said. "We may be able to help in ways that insurance can't."
Individuals and businesses may apply for a variety of programs that cover temporary housing grants, minor home repairs, and other disaster-related expenses. Low-interest loans from the SBA may also be available to cover losses of renters, homeowners and businesses not fully compensated by insurance.
Renters, homeowners and businesses that suffered losses due to the floods can register by calling 1-800-621-3362. Those who have already registered and have further questions can also call the number above. A separate TTY number is available for the speech- or hearing- impaired: 1-800-462-7585. The phone lines operate daily from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m.
This deadline does not apply to registrations for damages caused by the severe storms, floods and tornadoes that took place from April 28 through May 3. Those damages are covered by a separate disaster declaration that includes Bedford, Buchanan, Campbell, Cumberland, Greensville, Prince Edward, Shenandoah and Tazewell counties and the independent city of Bedford.
