ANDOVER, Mass. -- A series of free disaster assistance workshops will take place at home improvement centers in several Massachusetts and New Hampshire communities starting Tuesday.  These workshops are open to the public and are designed to provide information to residents on homeowner mitigation and on state and federal disaster assistance following the mid-May flooding.

The workshops are being offered by the Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) in partnership with home improvement centers. Mitigation experts will be on hand to provide information on steps individuals and homeowners can take to protect homes from future storm and flood damage.  Staff members from FEMA's Individual Assistance team will also be available to help answer more specific questions from individuals who registered for disaster assistance.

The FEMA disaster experts will provide beneficial mitigation tips and disaster assistance information to homeowners, building contractors, architects, and others who are interested. Homeowners can learn some simple inexpensive building techniques or strategies that could save big dollars in the event of a disaster.  Everyone is encouraged to attend.

All workshops will take place from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. and are scheduled as follows:

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program.  FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
