About the Disability
Employment Program
The Disability Employment Program (DEP) is responsible for ensuring that
all programs, activities, and facilities at the NIH are accessible to
people with disabilities. This is achieved through many programmatic initiatives
and individuals. The work of providing accessibility for people with disabilities
is a shared endeavor. The program is also responsible for providing reasonable
accommodation to individuals with disabilities.
In general, the DEP works to promote the hiring and advancement of people
with disabilities and to advise both management, and people with disabilities
about issues confronting people with disabilities in the workplace throughout
their careers, from recruitment to retirement.
We also want to maintain a work environment that will allow employees
with disabilities to be effectively utilized based on their skills, knowledge,
and abilities. Therefore, if the need arises to accommodate an employee
because of an existing temporary or permanent disability, the NIH procedures
for requesting and granting such accommodation as outlined in NIH Manual
Chapter 2404 “Reasonable Accommodation,” should be followed.
Every effort will be made to respond to accommodation requests within
a reasonable time frame.
