The NEI wishes to clarify two issues concerning PAR-04-136, “NEI Career Transition Award (K22)”, which was released in the August 6, 2004, issue of the NIH Guide to Grants and Contracts at http://grants.nih.gov/grants/guide/pa-files/PAR-04-136.html.

1. Review Criteria. The published section describing REVIEW CRITERIA contained a truncated sentence in the material describing review of the Mentor(s). The full text of this entry should read:

Mentor(s): Are the mentor(s)' research qualifications, scientific stature, experience, and track record appropriate to the applicant's career development needs. Is there evidence of previous experience in fostering the development of new investigators. Is the extent and nature of the supervision that will occur during the proposed award period adequate?

2. Intramural Scholar Development Phase. As appropriate to the proposed career development plan, all or a portion of the Scholar Phase of training may be performed in an intramural laboratory of another NIH Institute or Center. In this circumstance, the applicant should detail and justify this training in the Career Development Plan section of the application. In addition, a letter from the Scientific Director or Clinical Director of the sponsoring Institute or Center indicating their willingness to participate in this NEI-supported activity must accompany the application at submission. The NEI will provide appropriate fiscal support for salary, supplies, and equipment to the host Institute or Center for successful applicants.
