How Can a Mentor Help You

Mentors can help you launch your career at college or graduate school successfully – and they can help you keep from floundering, leaving some of your potential untapped, or even giving up on a field you would really enjoy. They may be instrumental in enabling you to find your strengths and build on them. They can show you where your career options lie and how to evaluate what is right for you. And, sometimes most importantly, they can help you get through tough times and make balanced decisions.

If you are still deciding on a major or area of specialization, mentors can help you focus on any next steps while you explore a wide range of options. If you are already sure of what you want to do, mentors can help you figure out "how to get there." Every institution and every profession has its own hidden "rules of the game," and mentors can help you clue into these rules and play accordingly, rather than having to figure them out on your own.
