The US National Institutes of Health offers competitive
scholarships to students from disadvantaged backgrounds
who are committed to careers in biomedical and health-related
research.
Robert
C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program
The Robert C. Byrd Honors Scholarship Program is a federally
funded, State-administered program to recognize exceptionally
able high school seniors who show promise of continued
excellence in postsecondary education.

Millennium Scholars Program
The Gates Millennium Scholars Program provides outstanding,
low-income African American, American Indian/Alaska
Natives, Asian Pacific Islander Americans, and Hispanic
American students with an opportunity to complete graduate
education in mathematics, science, engineering, education,
or library science.
GEM:
National Consortium for Graduate Degrees for Minorities
in Engineering and Science
The GEM Fellowship programs are designed to offer opportunities
for underrepresented minority students to obtain MS
degrees in engineering and Ph.D. degrees in engineering
and the natural and physical sciences through a program
of paid summer internships and graduate financial assistance.
Herbert
W. Nickens, M.D., Minority Medical Student Scholarships
The Herbert W. Nickens, M.D., Minority Medical Student
Scholarships were established by the AAMC to continue
advancing Dr. Nickens’ lifelong concerns about
the educational, societal, and health-care needs of
minorities. These awards consist of five scholarships
given to outstanding third-year minority medical students
who have demonstrated leadership in eliminating inequities
in medical education and health care.
MARC:
Minority Access to Research Careers
The Minority Access to Research Careers (MARC) Program
was created by the National Institute of General Medical
Sciences (NIGMS) to increase the number of biomedical
and behavioral scientists from minority groups. A key
objective of the MARC Program is the encouragement of
minority students in the pursuit of graduate training
leading to the Ph.D. degree in the biomedical and behavioral
sciences.
National
Medical Fellowships
National Medical Fellowships, Inc. is dedicated to improving
the health of underserved communities by increasing
the representation of minority physicians, educators,
researchers, and policymakers in the United States;
training minority medical students to address the special
needs of their communities; and educating the public
and policymakers about public health problems and needs
of underserved populations.
