COLUMBIA, Mo. -- Missouri homeowners, renters and business owners who experienced losses due to recent tornadoes and storms are encouraged to register for assistance with the U.S. Department of Homeland Security's Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) by calling 1-800-621-FEMA (3362) or TTY 1-800-462-7585 between 8 a.m. and 6 p.m., CDT, seven days a week, until further notice. People may also register online at www.fema.gov.

The phone conversation takes about 20 minutes. Callers will be asked for general information about their income, insurance coverage and damage to their residence or business. They should be prepared to give details about their housing needs, the location of the damaged property and a phone number where they can be reached. Even if Missourians who suffered losses have insurance, they should also register with FEMA because disaster assistance may be available to help with uninsured or underinsured losses or expenses.

The deadline for applying for federal disaster assistance for the March 11 to March 13 storms is May 15, 2006.

The deadline for applying for federal disaster assistance for the March 30 to April 3 storms is June 5, 2006.

FEMA manages federal response and recovery efforts following any national incident. FEMA also initiates mitigation activities, works with state and local emergency managers, and manages the National Flood Insurance Program (NFIP). FEMA became part of the U.S. Department of Homeland Security on March 1, 2003.
